Which Battery Should You Choose for an Electric Bike?
Choosing an electric bike battery depends primarily on your intended use, the range you are looking for, your motor's power, and the level of integration you want on your bike. At OZO, we design and assemble lithium batteries for electric bikes suitable for a wide range of applications: urban bikes, trekking bikes, mountain bikes, cargo bikes, touring bikes, or custom electrification projects. Not all batteries are designed to meet the same requirements. Some users are primarily looking for a compact and lightweight solution, while others prioritize long range, discreet integration, or a specific format compatible with their frame. This is why OZO offers several major battery families, with formats adapted to each configuration: frame-mounted batteries, rear rack batteries, and battery packs without a rigid casing for projects requiring minimal bulk or custom integration. Our batteries are designed and assembled in our workshops in France using carefully selected lithium cells, with a Battery Management System (BMS) ensuring safety and long service life, and an approach focused on performance, repairability, and durability.
The Different Electric Bike Battery Formats
Frame-Mounted Batteries
This is the most common format for electrifying city bikes, trekking bikes, and recreational mountain bikes. They are generally mounted on the bottle cage mounting points.
-
Advantages: Low and centered center of gravity, easy installation, key locking system.
-
Main models:
-
Bottle-Style Format: Very compact, ideal for lower range requirements or narrow frames.
-
Hailong / Reevo Format: The market standard, available in 36V and 48V, with capacities of up to 20Ah.
-
Rear Rack Batteries
Designed for city or touring bikes that already have a rear rack or cannot accommodate a frame-mounted battery, such as step-through frames.
- Advantages: Aesthetic integration, often with a rear light included.
- Applications: Mainly urban use and cycling tours.
PVC Battery Packs
These batteries do not have a rigid plastic casing. They are assembled, insulated with protective plates, and then heat-shrink wrapped in a PVC sleeve.
- Advantages: Excellent weight-to-energy ratio and customizable dimensions, allowing them to fit into frame bags or tight spaces.
- Voltages: Available from 24V to 72V for high-power kits, including speed-oriented or agricultural/industrial applications.
