WHAT MAKES UP A WHEEL MOTOR KIT FOR A BIKE?

It is possible to electrify your bike with two types of motors: the wheel motor, which is installed in place of the original front or rear wheel, and the crank motor, which is installed in place of the original crankset. These two electric kits are made up of different elements. We present them to you here!

COMPOSITION OF A WHEEL MOTOR KIT

The basic components of a wheel motor kit are:

  • The drive wheel (front or rear hub motor spoked on a rim),
  • The battery, to be chosen according to the desired autonomy
  • The controller (electronic calculator, or the brain of the kit),
  • The handlebar box (Display) which will display the main data for you,
  • The pedal sensor

Optionally, you can add a throttle and a brake cut-off.

THE DRIVE WHEEL

The drive wheel is installed in place of your front or rear wheel. Depending on your bike, OZO will wheellbuild the motor on a suitable rim so that you receive a drive wheel perfectly compatible with your bike.
All OZO wheels are hand-assembled by our passionate technicians in our workshop in Aix-en-Provence. To ensure the highest quality and reliability, our rims and spokes are made in France.
All rims are double-walled and spokes are 2.3mm diameter stainless steel.

THE CONTROLLER

The controller is the brain of your electric bike. It's an electronic box that receives commands from the pedal sensor, the display, the throttle, and brake cut-offs, and controls the motor operation based on these commands.
There are two formats of controllers: external or integrated into the battery support. If you choose a frame battery, the controller will be invisible because it will be integrated into the frame battery support.
For all other batteries, the controller will be external. You can attach it to your bike frame with screws or clamps, or position it under the luggage rack.

THE BATTERY

The battery is the heart of your electric bike, and it's also the most expensive component. The majority of electric-assist bikes have a 36V battery. At OZO, we offer 36V and 48V batteries. The 48V battery increases the power of the system. To choose the best battery for you, you will need to consider the following criteria:

  • The budget
  • The power of your kit
  • The desired autonomy
  • The position of the battery on your bike
  • The weight of the battery

HOW TO CHOOSE YOUR BATTERY?

THE HANDLEBAR BOX (DISPLAY)

The display is the dashboard of the electric bike. It allows you to activate and deactivate the system, choose the desired assistance level, and display all the electrical parameters and trips. OZO offers different models of displays for each kit with more or less features and different ergonomics.

Compact Color Display: Its compact format makes it perfect for mountain biking as it is less exposed to shocks. It is positioned on the left side of the handlebars and directly integrates the +/- buttons allowing you to choose from the 9 assistance modes offered.

Vertical Color Display: With this display, you have access to the best on the e-bike market. This model displays a maximum of electrical parameters and trips, has auto-adaptive backlighting according to brightness, and a USB port for recharging a smartphone or GPS while riding. 9 assistance modes fully customizable by the user: You are free to set the 9 modes so that your assistance adapts to your needs. Remote selector on the left side of the handlebars for better ergonomics.

THE PEDAL SENSOR

The pedal sensor activates pedal assistance. As soon as you pedal, the motor engages; when you stop pedaling, the motor stops. To be compatible with all bottom bracket standards, OZO offers different pedal sensor geometries. No worries on your side. The OZO team will choose the sensor that fits your bike.
